ABSTRACT
This study looked at the challenges
faced by women in Nigeria in the political process. The emphasis was on their
low participation during elections. As a group of the electorate that
constitutes over 50% of the Nigeria population it was a thing of worry that
their participation level in election was still low. Among the identified
reasons of their low participation includes, poverty, lack of education,
religion, culture and violence.
The survey method was employed
coupled with the new trend of ‘participant observation’ known as “Ethnography”
to feel the pulse of the women and see them in their natural setting. Among the
public relations strategies adjudged to be effective in their mobilization were
market square, town crier, church village square, August meeting, persuasion,
lobbing, opinion leaders, and traditional leaders.
Findings of the study revealed that
there is a relationship between educational and economic empowerment of women
in Nigeria and their low participation in election. It was also discovered that
public relations strategies will be effective weapons to mobilize women in
Nigeria for full participation in election. It is therefore the recommendation
of this study that girl-child education should be encouraged, Nigerian
politicians should learn to play politics by the rules to encourage more women
into politics, women groups should create awareness for the women on their
political rights while public relations enlightenment campaigns should be used
to expose the women on what they can achieve with their numerical strength.
